It is a well know fact that Alexander the Great was just that, great. At the young age of 30, he was the creator of one of the largest empires in ancient history. Undefeated in battled, well could be said he was one of the greatest commanders of all time. Leaders still study his tactics to this day. But what became of Alexander, while there is some question, was a cruel fate indeed. The great conquer the world had known, men had feared, nations had served, died at the age of 32 due to a case of the flu.
There are many choices to be made in life. Some big, some small. Because some may seem insignificant, they are passed by without giving much thought to. I have learned that it is the small things that make the difference. Like the flu that killed one of the greatest men of his time, if we are not careful, the flu of slothfulness and complacency can overcome us.
One of my favorite hockey teams is the Washington Capitals. The great Alexander Ovechkin is always exciting to watch. But even he needs his Wheaties in the morning, a small thing, to get him off to a great start. Plus practice everyday makes perfect. I know that it may seem like to follow Christ is an easy thing. Small and simple things repeated daily are a compass of truth, guiding us back to him. As we search the scriptures, pray for guidance, we will be led across the valley of sorrow to the promised land. All he asks of us is to look and live. I know that Christ lives, that through following his Gospel we can be safe, we can be happy, we can find peace each day of our lives.
